Glucose TestingAnton H. Clemens can be credited with the invention of the first blood glucose meter. While working for Ames Instrument R&D Department at the Ames Company in the 1960s, he began work on several prototypes of blood glucose meters. He was issued a patent for his meter in 1971. Approximately two years later, blood glucose meters were in the marketplace.
This first blood glucose meter could be obtained through prescription only. The original meter weighed in at a little less than two pounds. It was four inches wide and six and one half inches tall. This original meter is the grandfather of the more manageable, lightweight meters on the market today.
This meter was known as the Ames Reflectance Meter. As with most new products, other companies began to manufacture blood glucose meters. Today there are at least nine different companies in the United States alone which sell meters. There are upwards of 30 different styles of blood glucose monitors available on the market to choose from--good news for diabetics!
